The load lifting device for a crane or other lifting tackle has two hook-shaped arms (26), which are swung inwards towards each other to engage the load (10). These arms are attached to the ends of an inverted U-shaped frame (12) with a tube (19) extending vertically upwards from the centre of this crosspiece. Inside this tube, a second tube (15) with a lifting eye (16) on top can slide telescopically. The inner tube is connected by a linkage (19) with a set of levers matching the shape of the U-frame, which control the movement of the hooked arms. Incorporated between the telescopic tubes is a double-arm ratchet mechanism (42), and a second double-arm ratchet mechanism (32) is incorporated between the outer tube and an upper member (18) of the linkage to control the operation of the hooked levers.
