The ventilator, which may be installed in a building or vehicle, is designed so that it may be switched over to introduce a filter (9) into the air intake. The casing is cylindrical with a body (2), onto which an end cap can be secured by a clip. The cap is easily removed for access to the filter, and has a tapered end connection to which a connecting tube can be fitted. An operating spindle (15) projecting through an opening (21) at the other end can be pushed inwards to move a sealing block (11) inwards against a seating region (44) to prevent flow through the filter. In this position, air passes around the outside of the filter towards the discharge opening of the cap. The spindle is attached to an operating arm (26) at the inlet end, and when the spindle is pulled back again, a second blocking device (17) is operated, preventing flow around the outside, at the same time as the block is moved away from the seating.
