Sulphur is released from a metal sulphide by oxidising an aqs. suspension of the metal sulphide in the presence of a liquid, water immiscible solvent for sulphur in order to dissolve the released elementary sulphur and to decrease the harmful effects, of the released sulphur on the oxidn. and to effect the release of more sulphur. Specif. the metal sulphides contain pyrrohtite pentlandite and pyrites, and the aqs. suspension is heated to >110, pref. 130-170 degrees C under a partial oxygen press. of 10-30 atm. in order to oxidise the sulphide sulphur to elementary sulphur and sulphate sulphur, to oxidise and precipitate iron oxide cpds to dissolve Ni and to produce a residue contg. unconverted chalcopyrites and precipitated iron oxide cpds. The sulphide has such a particle size that 100% passes through a sieve with a mesh width of 0.15 mm. The suspension contains 2-50 esp. 5-30 wt.% solids. The solvent is a chlorinated hydrocarbon.
|
