Polyester yarns having a resistance-to-balling factor of 4:1 when tested on an I.C.I. gauging instrument, are produced from molten linear polyester, pref. contg. >=85 mol. % ethylene terephthalate units, by drawing off at very high speed from the spinneret, the filaments being stretched after-wards to give a double refraction of >=0.170, then crimpled mechanically, fixed and cut to staple length. The unstretched filaments have intrinsic viscosity 0.32-0.48, ultimate strength 3.5-5.0 g/den. nodular strength is not >3.0g/den. and ratio of ultimate strength to nodular strength >=1.5.
|
