Head comprises a cathode holder with replaceable cathode head mounted in an outer body which has a frusto-conical nozzle at its forward end and a lid attached to the forward end over the nozzle forms a frustoconical recess between the nozzle and lid which communicates with a concentric opening in the forward end of the head. A cylindrical rotatable member is fitted on the machined cylindrical outer surface of the wide end of the nozzle, the outer diameter of the member coinciding with the inside surface of channels machined in the outer body. Appts. is used for cutting or drilling metals in air or underwater in ship building and marine construction. The head eliminates the reversed thermic flow effect and the body of the plasmatron can be made of plastics thus reducing the wt.
