Localisation system for tool position on machine tool - uses probe at reference location to produce electrical position signal for control processor

The appts. uses a probe (2) with four flat surfaces (3-6) coupled into a box (1) by a moving element (10). The box is attached to a cross member at a reference point on the machine and contains hydraulic and electrical connections for the probe movement. Contact between the tool point (7) and the probe is transmitted into the box for conversion to an electrical signal to indicate the displacement whatever its direction. Instructions for the measurement are issued from the machine tool control system. The measurements for the probe are limited to a vertical axis and one longitudinal axis.
