Turbocharger for IC engine - has polished reflective heat shield between turbine rotor and bearing housing

The turbocharger has a turbine (10) on a shaft (11). The turbine casing has an end wall (12) parallel to the turbine with an axially projecting section (25) which carries a bearing housing (13). The bearing housing is sealed (14) to the shaft. An annular sheet (15) is fixed on the side of the bearing housing (13) facing the casing end wall. The side of the sheet facing the casing is polished and plated with nickel or chromium. It thus acts as a heat reflector and reduces the temperature rise and thermal stress of the bearing housing. There is an elastic and thermally insulating seal (16) between the plate and the shaft.
