A lubricant is applied to an intaglio printing cylinder 6 or other printing-image carrier and serves to reduce wear of the carrier and associated doctor 4. The lubricant can be formed of a suitable solid lubricant, for instance molybdenum disulfide, or of a carrier in which there is embedded the solid lubricant. The lubricant is then usually rubbed on to the cylinder surface. However, the lubricant need not be solid and can also be applied in a different manner, for instance, by rolling or spraying.
