The method serves to find free connection paths routed in a specific outgoing direction via the switching network of a telecommunications switching system. Two information elements are required for one search step, i.e. the occupancy state of the paths in the switching network (RK) on the one hand and the occupancy state of the lines (LG) leading out in the different directions (B1...Bn), on the other. The free outgoing lines (LG) are identified and retained in the connection set-up time slots in which the central control device (ZS) is not taken up by the connection set-up. The search for a free connection path is thus restricted in each case to a search for a free path in the switching network and a search for a free outgoing line (LG) from a selection of outgoing lines (LG) already identified as available, which has an advantageous effect on the number of search steps required in each case and therefore on the overall search time. <IMAGE>
