A tubular heat exchanger for heating and cooling wines and turbid liqs. in the mfr. of wine is used in conjunction with a heat pump with a reversible cycle of operation. Used as a cooler, the heat exchanger is designed for refrigerant evapn. to take place in a space sepd. by only a thermally conducting wall from the liq. to be cooled. The exchanger comprises an outer tubular shell through which liq. to be treated is circulated. The shell contains an open-ended, coaxial pipe through which liq. to be treated flows. The pipe is externally sleeved from end to end, leaving a narrow, jacket space between pipe and sleeve. The space is sealed at each end by filling in the annular gap between pipe and sleeve. The jacket space has spaced inlet and outlet connections so that refrigerant fluid can circulate. Very efficient heat transfer is achieved since liq. to be treated contacts all surface of jacket through which heat transfer fluid is circulated.
