Nematic compsns. with a low optical anisotropy comprise 4.9-30.0 wt.% of at least one substance (I) providing a positive dielectric anisotropy and 70-95.1 wt.% of a substance (II) providing reduced optical anisotropy. Optical anisotropy values of 0.04-0.10 can be obtained (esp. when (II) is a 4-n-alkyl-trans-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid) and can be varied by varying the (I)/(II) ratio. (I) is pref. of formula (Ia) (where R is 1-7C alkyl; n is 0 or 1; X is a direct bond or CH=CH; one of A and B is H and the other is Cl).
