In the thermal oxidn. of combustible components of salt solns. these components are oxidised without removing the resultant heat, the salt is then sepd. in liq. or solid form from the hot combustion gases, possibly together with part of the gases. Latent heat is then recovered from the sepd. gas and from the remaining main body of hot gas, possibly after addn. of cooler gas to deposit any sublimed salts. Also claimed is the appts. with a burner chamber sepd. from a boiler in which the heat is recovered. Used in association with oil- or gas-fired plant and extracts atmos.-polluting metals etc. Heat exchanger surfaces in the boiler are not encrusted with solidified salts, and need less cleaning. The appts. need not compromise between conflicting requirements for burner chamber and boiler as with known equipt.
