The wind turbine has the length of the blades varied telescopically, giving an axial extension of the length of the blade. The outer part of the blade slides relative to the inner part, running on guide rails or on rollers. The movement is driven by an electric motor, supplied from a controller that responds to wind velocity. The electric motor is coupled through a reduction gear unit. The coupling may be a screw and wheel driving a pinion engaging a rack attached to one of the two parts, or the motor may drive a screw and nut transmission. Alternatively a flexible cable might be wound onto a drum, and centrifugal force used to extend the blade.
