Supercharged four stroke IC engine - uses crankcase space of two cylinders as compressor for alternate cylinders

The engine has cylinders working in pairs and 360 deg. out of phase. The crankcase space of both cylinders is used to provide supercharging for each cylinder alternately. After compression in the crankcase, air or air/fuel mixture moves past non-return valve (4) into transfer duct (2). It is then fed to the appropriate cylinder, depending on which inlet valve is open. This method of supercharging only requires a gas tight crankcase and obviates the need for a high speed blower or turbocharger.
