<p>When the brake pedal is depressed it moves a control rod inside a piston to a point where pressurised hydraulic fluid passes up the bore of the rod through control openings. This fluid enters the end chamber of the assembly and then passes to the brake cylinder circuits on the wheels. At the same time the piston moves in the same direction as the rod. The piston movement compresses oil in a chamber and also sets, through an extension, the travel and operating pressure of a relief valve connected to the compression chamber. The greater the pedal travel the higher the relief pressure becomes thus appearing to simulate the braking effort required on the pedal. The resetting springs for piston and rod have relatively light forces and play no significant part in simulating breaking effort. If hydraulic power is lost the compressed oil from the compression chamber can provide some braking effort on the wheel cylinders.</p> |
