Aqueous release coating compositions for application to substrates having low absorption thereinto, excellent adhesion thereto, and easy and quick release and removal therefrom comprising: from about 3% to about 8% of polyvinyl alcohol; from about 9% to about 35% clay; from about 5% to about 12% of an adhesive binder; and from about 49% to about 75% of water. All percentages being by weight, based on the total weight of the aqueous release coating composition. The resulting release-coated substrates are also included in the inventive concept.
