A method and kit for detecting a disease state, characterized by a localized hypoxic/ischemic cell population or other cells with altered metabolisms similar to hypoxic/ischemic cells, in an animal are described. The method comprising the step of determining the concentration of succinate in a bodily fluid sample of said animal.
