The pneumatically driven counter-recoil mechanism of a reciprocating rolling mill for tubes is controlled by altering the volume of air driving the mechanism in relation to time and/or the travel of the mechanism. This is achieved using a further air chamber or piston pump (1) connected to the compression chamber (4) of the mechanism. The volume of air driving the mechanism is controlled by the position of the piston (5) in the chamber (1), the position being determined by a crank drive (2).
