PURPOSE:To prepare stable gamma-NiOOH for an active material in an alkaline battery readily, by adding an aqueous solution of a nickel salt and an aqueous solution of a persulfate continuously to a solution of a caustic alkali, and advancing the reaction in a specific temperature range. CONSTITUTION:An about 2mol/l aqueous solution, of a Ni salt, e.g. NiSO4, is continuously added to an aqueous solution of an alkali, e.g. 10N NaOH, at a constant rate. At the same time, an aqueous solution of a persulfate, e.g. a saturated aqueous solution of K2S2O8, in an amount of about 2 times that of the oxidizing agent required theoretically is continuously added to the solution to advance the oxidation reaction at a temperature of 100-110 deg.C and form and precipitate gamma- NiOOH. In the method, about 1g, based on 1l concentrated alkali, gamma-NiOOH having good crystallinity prepared by the melting method is first added to the reaction solution before the start of the reaction permits the formation of coarse crystals in the subsequent precipitation to give gamma-NiOOH precipitates of good filterability. |
