摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical compensation sheet in which discotic liquid crystal molecules are uniformly (in a monodomain state) and substantially vertically (homogeneously) aligned by forming an alignment film containing a specified modified polyvinyl alcohol. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal cell has a liquid crystal layer formed by sealing rodlike liquid crystalline molecules 13a to 13e between an upper substrate 11 and a lower substrate 15. The optical compensation sheet has an alignment film 22 and an optical anisotropic layer in this order on a transparent supporting body 23. The optical anisotropic layer is obtd. by aligning and fixing discotic liquid crystalline molecules 21a to 21e. The rodlike liquid crystalline molecules 13 and the discotic liquid crystalline molecules 21 correspond each other, and for example, the rodlike liquid crystalline molecules 13a optically compensate the discotic liquid crystalline molecules 21e. The alignment film 22 contains a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing 2 to 80 mol.% of recurring units having two, three or four aromatic rings or aromatic heterocycles in the side chains.
