By acoustically monitoring sounds in the milk line or teat cup using a sound or vibration sensor the milking process being performed by the milking machine may be monitored. The signals from piezoelectric transducer 12 are measured and analyzed over time and deviations in amplitude or intensity as compared to thresholds are used to determine the state of the milking process.
