The prepn. of modified hydrocarbon resins from the addn. prod. of an olefinic unsatd., opt. esterified carboxylic acid and/or its anhydride, and a hydrocarbon resin prepd. by cationic polymsn. of 5-12C cycloaliphatic dienes and/or 1-9C unsatd. aromatic hydrocarbons, comprises reacting the addn. prod. with >=1 of (a) free monoamino acids or their esters, (b) N-methylol cpds. of an amine, the methylol gp. being opt. (partially)etherified with 1-10C alcohols, (c) isocyanates and (d) thioisocyanates such that 0.1-50, pref. 0.5-20% of the carboxy gps. are transformed into gps of formula -CONR1R2, -(CO-)2-N-R or -COOCH2NR3R4 (where R1 is 1-20C carboxy alkyl, opt. 1-6C alkyl-substd) mononuclear carboxy aryl (both opt. esterified), or (cyclo)aliphatic aromatic or mixed aromatic-aliphatic 1-4C valent 1-39C (thio)isocyanate opt. contg. free or capped (thio)isocyanate gps; R2 is G or 1-18C hydrocarbon; R3 is H, methylol, or methylene bridge of an opt. etherified N-alkylol or methylol-ether of opt. the same resin, or an alkylated methylol with 1-10C alkoxy gp.; and R4 is the residue of a urea, melamine-, guanamine-and/or cyanamide resin or a polyurethane resin)- in an amt. of >=0.1, pref. 0.5 wt. % of the hydrocarbon resin. The modified resins are used as binders for printing inks, esp. relief printing. They have good drying and pigment wetting properties. Pigment concn. may be lowered to obt. good print density.
|
