The machine includes a stone-holder (14) and a cutter-holder (11) which are capable of relative displacement, utilising a motor or similar to effect the displacement and, thus, effect the cutting of the stone. Cutting is controlled by monitoring the resistance encountered by the cutter (10) in making contact with the stone (12), with the data collected being used to regulate cutting forces applied through the motor. Monitoring can be effected by direct detection of the resistance to cutting, by detecting a component of the resistance, or by detecting a related operational parameter. Detection may be applied to the force resisting the cutter feed, or to a related parameter, or to the resultant of a feed resistance vector and a cutting force vector. |
