PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape with no cut and scratch on its sides. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape 15 is carried in the direction of an arrow mark A. Sapphire blades 25 to 28 are set in the direction right to the direction in which the magnetic tape 15 is carried. The sapphire blades 25 and 27 move back and forth in the direction of an arrow mark B or C by a moving mechanism 30, and the sapphire blades 26 and 28 move back and forth in the direction opposite to the sapphire blades 25 and 27. The moving speed is high around the end of a moving stroke but slow around the center of the moving stroke. The positions where the magnetic tape 15 gets into contact with each of the sapphire blades 25 to 28 are always changed while the shaving is made, thereby forms no level differences at the edges of the sapphire blades caused by the abrasion. By this, the cut and the scratch on the sides of the magnetic tape caused by the level differences at the edges are not formed.
