In order to control dental instruments, including a multi-function syringe, in conjunction with a dental treatment apparatus whose instruments can be controlled using a foot control element and whose syringe handpiece does not contain any valves for its working media, a device is proposed with which both a foot control of all instruments including the syringe handpiece can be carried out using the foot control element, as well as a hand control of the syringe handpiece using a manually activated function selection and signal transmission unit accommodated in the syringe handpiece. The alternative foot control and hand control of a multi-function syringe without valves for its working media in conjunction with the foot control of the further instruments is improved to the extent that the hand control of the multi-function syringe can be guided exclusively on the syringe handpiece. <IMAGE>
