A method of making ammonia by contacting nitrogen and hydrogen in synthesis proportions at synthesis conditions with a catalyst comprising hydrided titanium supported on a metal or inter-metallic compound capable of forming an unstable hydride. The catalyst may be prepared by alloying titanium or zirconium with a second metal capable of forming an inter-metallic compound with titanium under alloying conditions such as to produce said inter-metallic compound and free titanium in an amount effective when hydrided to catalyze the conversion of nitrogen and hydrogen to ammonia. The second metal may be selected from iron, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, manganese and mixtures thereof. A stoichiometric excess of hydrogen is desirably used. |
