1392856 Bookbinding VELO BINO Inc 14 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 17294/72 Addition to 1305788 Heading B6A In a method of and apparatus for binding books substantially as described in Specification 1,305,788, an apertured thermoplastic strip 26 is located on a bridge 101 adjacent the end of a sheet supporting platen 41, a studded strip 24 then being urged through marginal holes in the sheets 21 and the apertures of strip 26 by a pressure bar 73 driven by a motor via a screw jack and linkage including a compressible spring, heated knives 104 then being driven by cam mechanism firstly horizontally to sever the studs, then upwardly to form heads on the studs. The knives are then retracted and cooling fingers 141, e.g. of aluminium, advanced by the cam mechanism to shape the heads and cool them before the pressure bar is retracted. A punch mechanism (62), Fig. 9 (not shown), may be provided in the apparatus for punching holes in the sheets prior to binding. A sheet side guide and a flexible back stop 42 may be provided adjacent the platen 41. Microswitches control both the pressure applied to the strip and sheet assembly and the operations of the binding cycle after manual initiation. |
