<p>A method and an apparatus for checking the distances to the preceding and following vehicles are provided to obtain accurate distance information by measuring the distances after determining whether the preceding and following vehicles travel on the same lane. An apparatus for checking the distances to the preceding and following vehicles includes a first camera(43), a first distance measuring unit(45), a second camera(53), a second distance measuring unit(55), a storage(20), and a controller(10). The first camera takes an image of a front view. The first distance measuring unit measures the distance to the preceding vehicle. The second camera takes an image of a rear view. The second distance measuring unit measures the distance to the following vehicle. The storage stores a reference pattern and a lane pattern, which are used for determining whether a vehicle exists on the images taken by the first and second cameras. The controller compares the images with the front and rear reference patterns to detect the preceding and following vehicles, recognizes the lane of the detected vehicles, and controls the first and second distance measuring units.</p> |
