Process for the preparation of tertiary, optically active aliphatic compounds

A microbiological process for the preparation of tertiary, optically active aliphatic compounds of the formula <IMAGE> is described. In this process, a microorganism which is an aerobe or facultative aerobe and which hydrogenates a double bond located between CH and methylated C in an aliphatic chain is allowed to act on a compound of the formula <IMAGE> in an aqueous medium. X, Y, X' and Y' in the formulae I and II have the meaning stated in Claim 1. The compounds of the formula II are intermediates in the synthesis of, inter alia, natural, optically active vitamin E, vitamin E esters and vitamin K1.
