A probe (20) containing a temperature sensor (100) is used to measure the temperature at a first and a second, specific instant. The measured temperature values determined are converted by an analog/digital converter (30) into signals which have a variable pulse frequency determined by the measured temperature values. A counter (34) is used to determine an extrapolated temperature value from these signals on the basis of the temperatures measured at the two instants, of the time difference between the two instants and of a time constant of the temperature sensor, and to display said value digitally in Fahrenheit or Celsius units on a display device (50). Control means (42, 76, 80) effect the release of the analog/digital converter (30) at the two instants and control the counter (34). This electronic thermometer determines the temperature in a short time, and uses a cost-effective temperature sensor and electronic components which are easy to obtain. Applications are in, e.g., the medical field for measuring the temperature of a patient. <IMAGE>
