Diesel engine exhaust afterburner - has soot filter and electric heating coil in contact with it

The Diesel engine is particularly intended for driving a domestic heat pump unit and has an exhaust afterburner chamber (1), which contains a soot filter (6). The latter is provided with an external energy supply in the form of an electric heating coil (7) in contact with the filter. The chamber may contain a long helical exhaust gas passage (5) from inlet (2) to outlet (9,3) surrounded by porous filter material. The coil may be arranged in a helical recess (10) in the inner wall surface of this filter. The energy supply may be thermostatically controlled via a sensor (16) in the chamber.
