The supervisory system employs optical fibre light guides (5,6) to transmit a light signal from the headlamps and tail lights to the dashboard. Here the output from the light guides is used for display and warning. The light guides (5,6) terminate in a housing (2) fitted at a suitable place on the instrument panel. The light emitted is visible to the driver through openings (8) in the housing. Half reflecting mirrors (16) in the line of the light beam direct some light towards photodiodes (13) forming the control input to an integrated circuit. If the road lights are switched on the integrated circuit is activated. It then monitors the photodiode output, e.g. for equality of signal. An inequality, due e.g. to a bulb failure, causes an output which switches on the acoustic warning device (15).
|
