Spark erosion machines produce the removal of metals by controlled electrical discharges between the tool electrode and the workpiece. Optimum erosion is only possible when a particular size of the gap between electrode and workpiece is maintained. To achieve this, the electrode must be advanced in each case by the amount of material removed. The control movement of the electrode occurs in dependence on the gap width measured in each case. It is important to display the dynamic gap control movements of the tool electrode. This is done by means of an analogue display (3). This consists of a number of light-emitting diodes (4) arranged adjacently to one another at a distance on a circle or polygon. If the analogue display (3) consists, for example, of a hundred light-emitting diodes (4), they provide the possibility of displaying the direction and extent of the dynamic gap control movements in the order of magnitude of 1/100 mm clearly and simply by spatial displacement of a spot of light similar to a mechanical pointer movement. If it is intended to display gap control movements of 1/1000 mm, a thousand light-emitting diodes (4) must be used for the analogue display. <IMAGE>
