The capsize preventer (7) is for boats partic. inflatable dinghies and liferafts. It is applied to designs of boats with one or more stabilising bodies secured to the underside of the buoyant element. A material is used for these bodies which absorbs water and in consequence expands to a large multiple of its dry volume. The bodies may consist of plates which are flat when dry. The plates are perforated to accommodate cords the length of the expanded height fixed to their undersides and that of the boat. Alternativley, where the stabilisers are bags of flexible material unfolding and filling with water, enough expansive material (10) is put into these to fill them completely when expanded.
