A protective suit, esp. for protection against intense cold, is of flexible, watertight and possibly gastight material and has sleeves or collars to fit around the arms and neck. Each sleeve or collar in the at-rest state is at a distance from the associated limb or neck but, when in use, expands to fit closely around the limb or neck. Pref. the sleeve, cuff or collar has a relatively stiff inner core and the outer sleeve material is drawn onto this by internal vacuum, so that the core keeps the tubular material away from the body. In the operating state air is let into the tube through a valve, allowing the tube to adopt its normal, rounded or similar 3-dimensional form by rising away from the flat inner face of the stiff ring and pressing against the body. The suit is partic. for crews of aircraft flying over cold seas.
