An IC engine comprises a combustion chamber(18) with an exhaust port(24) and an inlet port(22), a main inlet passage (86) for supplying air-fuel mixt. to the inlet port, a spark plug(20) threadedly fixed in the cylinder head with a spark gap disposed predetermined position in the combustion chamber, injection chamber(56) provided in the cylinder head close to the spark gap, an injection port(60) providing communication between the combustion chamber and injection chamber, an aux. inlet valve(28) positioned in advance of the injection chamber for opening & closing the aux. inlet passage, & an operating mechanism for opening & closing the aux. inlet valve.
