A device and a process for the preparation of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) by reacting nitrogen and oxygen gases in a plasma furnace 10. In this process, a plasma of oxygen and nitrogen in gaseous form is introduced into the reaction chamber 20 of the plasma furnace 10 whose inside walls are lined with a catalyst chosen from a group comprising substances containing tungsten trioxide (WO3) and molybdenum trioxide (MoO3). The invention also relates to the use of the process for the preparation of nitric acid.
