An emergency lubrication system 10 for oil or oil mist is embodied in the main lubrication system for a point of lubrication of a gas turbine engine, and includes an emergency oil reservoir 40 interconnected between the main source of pressurized lubricant and an air nozzle 22, which is capable of either providing a flow of oil 26 or a flow of oil mist to the point 12 of lubrication. A source of pressurized air is connected to the air nozzle 22 through a control piston valve 50, and the latter also is provided in a vent line 80 extending between the emergency oil reservoir 40 and the atmosphere. During normal operation of the main lubrication system, the source of pressurized oil is connected through the emergency lubricant reservoir 40 to the nozzle 22 for providing a stream of lubricant to the point 12 of lubrication. Upon failure of the source of pressurized lubricant, the control piston valve 50 is actuated so as to connect the emergency lubricant reservoir 40 to the atmosphere by the vent conduit 80, and simultaneously connect the source of pressurized air to the air nozzle 22. The pressurized air flow through the nozzle aspirates or draws oil from the emergency oil reservoir 40 to provide an oil jet or oil mist flow to the point 12 of lubrication. The vent conduit 80 ensures that the oil in the emergency oil reservoir is drawn at a controlled rate, thereby providing a flow of lubricant to the point of lubrication for a limited period of time to enable the engine to maintain its operation. The emergency system produces extremely small droplets of uniform distribution of oil, which are distributed towards the point of lubrication at supersonic speed. <IMAGE> |
