A mono alkali metal salt of 1- amino-8-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid is produced with a reduced amount of by-product, by subjecting 1- aminonaphthalene-3,6,8-trisulfonic acid or its alkali metal salt to alkali fusion which is carried out by adjusting the alkali concentration at the beginning to 20 to 29% by weight, controlling the concentration during the reaction by addition of alkali to or removal of water from the reaction system, and controlling the concentration at the end of the fusion to 25 to 35% by weight.
