PURPOSE:To obtain a dialkylbenzene isomeric mixture with a high p-isomer content selectively, by alkylating a monoalkylbenzene with an olefin, etc. in the presence of a specific acid extraction mordenite zeolite exchanged with hydrogen as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A monoalkylbenzene, particularly toluene or cumene, is reacted with an alkylating agent selected from an olefin, an alcohol and an alkyl halide in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) an acid extraction mordenite zeolite exchanged with hydrogen ions, prepared by treating a mordenit zeolite with an acid, and having a SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 15-100 and an Na ion content <=0.5wt%, or (B) the zeolite exchanged with a metallic ion or metallic oxide other than alkali metals and/or impregnated with a metallic oxide, preferably at 250-500 deg.C, in the vapor phase to give the titled mixture with a high p-isomeric content. |
