Bisphenol sulphone derivs. (I) (n is 2) are prepared by oxidation of (I) ( n is 0 or 1) with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an equimolar amount of an alkali metal hydroxide (relative to I) and water opt. mixed with an organic solvent which does not form organic peracids during the reaction. Where R is H, halo, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, OH, alkoxy, allyloxy (examples indicate this is probably a mistranslation of aryloxy from original Japanese filing), COOH or alkoxycarbonyl; m is 1 to 3 and the R groups may be the same or different. Additionally two adjacent R groups may convert the benzene ring to a naphthalene ring. The hydrogen peroxide is preferably used as the 30-35 percent aqueous soln. It is present at the rate of 1.5 to 5.0 times stoichiometrically required amount. The reaction temperature is preferably 30 to 110 deg.C. (I) (n is 2) are light stabilisers, polyolefin modifiers, lubricant additives, agricultural chemicals and intermediates. The reaction does not require expensive catalysts and does not require precautions against explosions as with prior art processes.
|
