The top comprises a wooden base panel to which a cover plate of plastic is glued, together with edge cladding. The base panel (1) and the cover plate (2) are enclosed between wooden edge strips (3,4) having mitred joints at the corners, and each with a wide rib (10) protruding from the inside edge for the entire length. Each rib is of wedge-section, with a top surface (14) sloping upwards and outwards towards the edge of the sheet, and is glued in a groove cut in the panel edge below the plate, a free edge strip (7) of the plate being bent upwards and resting on the rib.
