The installation for transmitting digital data by infrared light waves in the open air comprises a first station including a transmitter (7) and a second station including a receiver (8), the transmitter comprising an infrared transmission diode situated inside a tube provided with a lens for focusing the infrared waves, the receiver comprising a diode for receiving infrared waves situated in a tube provided with a focusing lens intended to focus the waves transmitted by the transmitter (7) onto the reception diode, the transmitter being excited by an electrical signal consisting of a sequence of pulses, the diode of the receiver (8) being connected to an electronic circuit which amplifies and filters the electrical current produced by the light waves exciting the diode of the receiver. <IMAGE>
