In operating a pressurised water nuclear reactor steam generation plant a symmetrical power distribution axially throughout the core is maintained during normal operating including load follow and the steam generator(28) is operated completely below the superheated steam region. Core reactivity and reactor power output are increased without markedly altering axial power distribution on given demand by reducing average temperature within the core, while maintaining constant primary coolant flow rate. The method maintains uniform symmetrical xenon distribution above and below the core center.
