Parent patent described a heat exchanger, partic. a radiator, of the type comprising a tube with external gills in the form radial flanges, each flange has a zone in contact with the tube which is of greater thickness than the remainder of the flange. This type of heat transfer gill is more efficient than fills of constant thickness, so a lighter wt. heat exchanger can be used for a given duty. In this addn. each flange is made from a single sheet of metal. The sheet is folded itself twice to form a flattened "Z" with its upper and lower branches extending beyond a central zone of triple-sheet thickness. A hole is formed through the central zone to accept the tube which pressed through, the hole periphery gripping tightly on the tube. The hole in the triple-thickness zone can be of a dia. which is smaller than that of the tube, when the tube is pressed through it carries the endge of the hole with it to form a collar on the downstream side which grips the tube firmly. Heat exchangers employing gills with thickened central zone can be made more cheaply than previously. The gill is made from a single sheet of thin metal and requires no supplementary collars or ferrules to provide extra thickness in the tube contact zone. s. 3,4,5.
|
