The fast response heater for a vehicle has a turbine driven by the exhaust gas stream and driving a simple air compressor. This supplies air to a flow restriction so that the work performed on the air through the restriction heats the air directly. The heated air is then passed to the normal heater. The heater has few components and is driven off the exhaust as soon as the engine operates. No complex fuel fired heater is required. The exhaust stream is diverted to the turbine (5) by a flow control valve (15) in the exhaust line. The valve operates in conjunction with thermostats to ensure a controlled heating effect. The fast response heater is wound down as the conventional heater takes effect.
