Hatch covers for container ship - has support beams bridging hatch for over-deck loading

The hatch covers for a container ship are braced by support beams which bridge the hatch opening and which enable the covers to be placed over them. Additional containers are stacked on the covers and secured between upright guides. The weight of the covers is considerably reduced. The beams are operated by hydraulic rams (10) which also provide a watertight closure against the covers (4). The covers can be folding types so that a compact storage of the covers is possible. This eliminates lifting of the heavy covers with dockside cranes.
