The stapling machine has an actuating arm (14) secured to the body (10) to pivot about a pin (15). A driving pin (50) extends through an end portion (171) of a tongue (17) on the arm, and through arcuate slots (140) in the body. When the arm is in its original position, the driving pin is at the lower end of the arcuate slots. The driving pin contacts against a movable fitting (20) to move the fitting away from the base (60) of the body to allow insertion or removal of papers to be stapled. Once papers have been inserted into the gap between the base of the body and the base panel (24) of the movable fitting, the arm is partially depressed to allow the fitting to be raised to clamp the papers.
