3-Aminomethyl-3,5,5-tri:methyl-cyclohexyl:amine continuous prodn. - from 3-cyano-tri:methyl-cyclohexanone by condensing with ammonia then catalytic hydrogenation

Continuous prodn. of 3-aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl amine (I) comprises (a) reacting 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethyl cyclohexanone (II) with excess ammonia at 40-100 (50-70) deg. C in absence of a catalyst, then (b) hydrogenating the reaction mixt. formed at 100-170 (130-150) deg.C over catalyst contg. cobalt, nickel or iron. Pref. the first stage is carried out in a reactor which prevents backmixing of partly-reacted material with fresh feed. An appts. for this process in which the reactor has lamellar inserts (esp. cylindrical reversing baffles) is also claimed. This process gives improved yields with reduced formation of aminoalcohol by-prod; esp. selectivity for (I) is about 85% which is 10% better than in the known process. Because of the lower impurity content, energy costs for distillative purificn. are reduced.
