The arrangement is intended for treating e.g. poultry manure in suspension in water, feeding the suspension to an algae culture, dissolving carbon dioxide obtd. by combustion, growing algae in the culture exposed to light, and sepg. the algae thus produced for mixing with animal feed. The manure is mixed with the water and the organic matter present in the suspension subjected to aerobic fermentation to produce carbon dioxide and a protein-rich sludge contg. micro-organisms. After sepg. this sludge, the remaining soln. contains mainly inorganic matter and is fed to the culture for growing the algae. Aerobic fermentation prior to algae culture removes the organic matter which would otherwise promote bacterial growth interfering with prodn. of algae. It also produces part of the carbon dioxide which is mixed with the organics-free soln. to make algae growth possible. The fermented organic sludge forms a further valuable component for mixing with the feedstuff. This arrangement eliminates the need for drying the manure and the resulting unpleasant smell, requires less energy and provides a more useful prodt. |
